More often than not, substance use addictions (nicotine, alcohol, or drugs) start with experimental use of the substance in social situations. For some people, the substance use becomes more frequent. As time passes, a person may feel the need to use more of the substance to get their desired effect. Eventually, a person may need the substance to simply feel “normal.”
Some common symptoms of addiction include:
- Having intense urges for the substance
- Over time, needing more of the substance to get the same effect
- Not meeting obligations or work responsibilities
- Making certain that you maintain a supply of the substance
- Focusing more and more time and energy on getting and using the substance
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using the substance
- Failed attempts to control or quit the substance use
- Feeling the need to use the substance regularly, which can be daily or multiple times a day
It is important to note that addiction issues are not limited to substances. Some common behavioral addictions include gambling, shopping, and video games.
